Serama Chickens
03.31.09 (12:19 am)   [edit]

Serama cock next to a 300ml soft drink can Spotted this on a news segment about their growing popularity as pets. Serama chickens are miniature chickens – the mature cocks are about the size of a 500ml mineral water bottle! They originate from Malaysia and are beginning to gain popularity in the US and UK as pets. Regular pageants are held in parts of Malaysia and a prize-winning Serama can fetch about US$3000!

The chickens are really tiny and weigh less than 500g. Here are a few more pics courtesy of the feathersite.com. Notice the characteristic puffed-up chest and soldier-straight posture. Lots more pics at the feathersite!

Below is a rather blurry video of a Serama judging in action.

Wow, I have never heard of these mini-chickens. I can't believe how small they are and stay. Seems kinda cool. Plus they can survive longer since they are too small to be worthwhile eating, so you might as well keep them around. Brilliant chicken survival technique!

Thanks for reading OS. Apparently the survival strategy doesn't work tho' 'cos the roosters are supposed to be an aphrodisiac (no - I have no idea how you need to prepare the chicken). However, noone is going to eat a US$3000 bird that wins the pageant - all he has to worry about is bird flu!

With their move from Samoa, son and family inhrited three Seramas with house they just bought in Hawaii! I did research on chickens.
Previous owner had made wonderful landscape of native Hawaiian --edible and decorative -- plants. These little guys patrol the acre and eat the bugs. They eat little else, but for safe treats! They curl up under shed for now. There are rats and mongooses in area, but so far not on property. Reminder that chocolate, raw potato and avocado are poisonous for them.
Wonderful pets. I think they are adjusting to new owners!
